Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is the production of food, fiber, or other plant/animal products using farming techniques that protect natural resources without sacrificing profitability or social justice. To this end, we offer a full suite of technological and social skills to align agricultural endeavors with this triple bottom line of sustainability.

At its core, sustainable agriculture orchestrates the stocks and flows of water and carbon in partnership with open-source genetic resources to turn waste streams of other processes into valuable products.

We offer soil health evaluation and management services, life cycle assessment of carbon and water footprint and integrated, holistic approaches to land management that respect ecological limits, communities, and individuals.

Carbon Footprint Analysis

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) can be emitted through land clearance, the production and consumption of food, fuels, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, transportation and other services. Though the Carbon Footprint name originates from Ecological Footprint, a Carbon Footprint is more focused than an Ecological Footprint as they merely measure emissions of gases that cause climate change in to the atmosphere.

A Carbon Footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by an organization, event, product or service and is currently the most common focus of a Life Cycle Assessment. The carbon footprint of a product or activity is expressed in kg of CO₂ equivalents (CO₂e). Some agricultural products can have a negative Carbon Footprint, meaning they sequester and store more atmospheric carbon than is emitted in their production.

Water Footprint Analysis

Globally, agricultural water use accounts for 70% of all withdrawals of water stores used by human activity and approximately 40% of the world’s food is currently grown in artificially irrigated areas. By 2050, the global water demand is estimated to increase by nearly 20% for agriculture alone. Water Footprint analysis used alongside Life Cycle Assessment provides a science-based characterization of water use and a critical first step in improving and quantifying efficiency.

Soil Conservation

The soil is a recycling system for nutrients and organic wastes, a regulator of water quality, a modifier of atmospheric composition, and a medium for plant growth. This makes it the critical provider of ecosystem services. Soil conservation is the prevention of soil loss from erosion or reduced fertility by over usage, acidification, salinization or other chemical soil contamination.

Above-ground and below-ground biodiviersities are tightly interconnected, making soil conservation and protection of ultimate importance for any restoration or conservation plan.

Pond Development

If it’s backyard ponds for koi, irrigation and retention ponds, stocked ponds for fishing, recycling/bioremediation ponds for agricultural runoff, production space for aquatic plants, or treatment plans for drinking water, let us help you create what you need.

Farm and Hydrologic Mapping

We can find or generate high resolution imagery to make maps of your property and the surrounding landscape to allow your organization to use a bird’s eye view for management or develop a map that shows how water moves based on digital elevation models. If you’re not sure where to put a pond or site a structure, we can help you look at your property in an entirely new way.

Landscaping

Plants and trees can purify the air we breathe, shade us from the sun, decrease stormwater runoff, and protect us from cold winds if we choose and plant them ecologically. Sited appropriate, they can reduce the heating and cooling costs of structures nearby. These “ecosystem services” are a benefit of landscape plants that far outweigh the costs associated with planting and maintenance. The built environment is our shared human habitat.

Designing for Ecosystem Services

What and where to plant to maximize energy conservation in your home is geographically dependent on factors like seasonal weather patterns and latitude, in addition to other constraints including existing ground cover and your own aesthetic interests. Our knowledge of plant physiology and ecology is a palette we use to build beautiful and functional landscapes.

Green Infrastructure Development

Green Infrastructure refers to the living landscapes providing functional services to the city. In contrast to Grey Infrastructure (highways, utility corridors, sewers) which offer the conveniences of civic life, Green Infrastructure provides for comfortable outdoor living (parks, greenways, arboretums, riverwalks) in urbanized areas. Green Infrastructure is increasingly being recognized as a critical component in urban and regional planning.

Small Scale Food Production

If irrigated lawns were considered a crop, they would be the #1 crop (by area) in the United States. Backyard gardening may not be able to provide for all of our nutritional requirements, but they can provide significant quantities of fresh fruit, vegetables, culinary and tea herbs.

It doesn’t get more local than right out your front door.

Low-Maintenance Landscape Installation

A low-maintenance landscape is one that requires minimal effort to maintain. Lawncare, specifically mowing, requires a significant monetary and/or labor time investment. There are aesthetically pleasing alternatives to the plain grass lawn that will improve your comfort and raise the value of your property.
